Canterbury Rugby Club head coach Matt Corker warns against complacency ahead of home game against National League 2 East basement boys North Walsham after their shock 35-26 win over Henley

There will be no room for complacency when Canterbury Rugby Club host basement boys North Walsham, head coach Matt Corker insists.

Canterbury return to action when they welcome the Norfolk outfit to Merton Lane this Saturday after a free weekend.

North Walsham are well adrift at the foot of the table but did earn a shock 35-26 home win against fourth-placed Henley last weekend - their first league victory of the season.

“I’ve seen them play quite a lot recently and they’re a decent team,” said Corker, whose side could do the double over Walsham this season after winning 54-10 away in November as Jamie Stephens (2), Shay Kerry, Tyler Oliver, Will McColl, Alfie Orris and Garry Jones got among the tries.

“Their situation in terms of the league table means they play without fear. They score a lot of points.

“A lot of teams in that part of the league don’t score a lot of points - but that’s not the case for them!

“It could be quite challenging and that’s why we need to make sure we put points on the board and control the game.”

Corker’s troops were beaten in all three February fixtures.

The coach, whose side sit eighth, admitted: “We needed to have a good conversation - and we did - about the things that help us win and the things that get in the way of that.

“The two halves at Westcombe Park (in a 27-14 defeat last time out) were massively different. We have had tough days, but not that sort of turnaround at half-time.

“Going into the next three-game block, this is the business end of the season now. Our destiny is massively in our own hands.”

Canterbury had been sitting much higher up the table before recent defeats but, with only 22 points separating fourth from 11th, there’s plenty to play for.
