Canelo vs Bivol Weight: What Class Will the Fight Be Contested In?

Canelo Alvarez is set to make his return to the ring with Matchroom Boxing on Saturday 7th May 2022, but what weight class will he be fighting in?

The current P4P great Canelo will be facing WBA Light Heavyweight Champion Dmitry Bivol in his return to a Matchroom ring.

This will be Canelo’s first fight back with the promotion since 2021, and he has signed a two-fight deal with the Eddie Hearn-fronted company.

It was confirmed by Matchroom BoxingCanelo will be making the move up to Light Heavyweight for the contest and challenging for the WBA Light Heavyweight title.

Canelo spoke about the change in weight class in an interview with the promotion, saying: “I am very happy with this fight against Dmitry Bivol. It is another great challenge for me and my career — especially as I go up in weight and face an exceptional light heavyweight champion like Bivol.

“I am also very excited that we have this fight slated for Cinco De Mayo Weekend – May 7 – for all the fans to enjoy. We will be ready, like we always are.”

Matchroom Boxing’s Hearn also discussed the upcoming bout and the move of weight class for the P4P great. He said: “It is an absolute honour to announce a multi-fight promotional deal with the pound-for-pound king Canelo Alvarez.
