Kamaru Usman vs Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez: Dana White calls it 'a stupid fight that makes no sense'

UFC president Dana White believes Kamaru Usman boxing Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez would be a ‘stupid fight that makes no sense’.

Usman, 34, has long campaigned for a shot at Mexico’s pound-for-pound king, claiming he can do what Floyd Mayweather himself could not should they share a ring.

However, the UFC strictly prohibits its fighters from competing outside of the promotion, unless they are granted special exemption of course, as was the case with Conor McGregor.

The Irish MMA superstar crossed codes in August 2017 as he entered the ring for the first time as a professional for a multi-million dollar showdown with the former five-weight world champion which was aptly dubbed ‘The Money Fight’

And now Usman wants to do the same thing with Canelo Alvarez as he eyes a huge pay day of his own.

But according to White, he is barking up the wrong tree.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I think that he is serious about it.

“He shouldn’t be serious about it. I don’t like that fight at all. Everything about it is horrible.

“Usman is not a boxer. Canelo is probably the best guy out there right now. It’s a stupid fight that makes no sense.”

White also says he doesn’t think there would be as much interest in it as there was for McGregor vs Mayweather.

He added: “I don’t even know how many people would be interested in seeing that.

“It’s like when Conor and Floyd fought, it sort of took on a life of its own. They talk about Tyson Fury and Francis, too.

“What do you think’s going to happen in those fights? Those guys are the best in the world at boxing.

“It’s a fight that took on a life of its own. Everywhere I went, people asked me if those two are going to fight and it just kept building and building and building.
