Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin 3: James Toney's surprise hot take is bound to stir debate

Boxing legend James Toney has given his prediction for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez‘s trilogy fight against Gennady Golovkin.

Mexico’s undisputed super-middleweight champion will put his world title belts on the line against Golovkin four years after defeating him by majority decision.

If the Mexican wins then he is expected to take on Dmitry Bivol in a highly-anticipated rematch later next year following his shock defeat to the Russian in May.

Canelo Alvarez‘s task for his 62nd professional bout will be overcoming his bitter rival Golovkin, who enters their trilogy fight riding an impressive four-fight winning streak.

One of the most anticipated fights of the year has divided opinion in the boxing world, with many believing the hard-hitting and dangerous Canelo will be too much for the ageing Golovkin.

Toney, who retired in 2017 at the age of 48, was recently asked to offer his prediction for next month’s match-up.

And the former three-weight world champion didn’t hold back when providing his two cents, in particular his thoughts on former pound-for-pound king Canelo.

Asked who he thinks will win the trilogy fight, Toney told ESNews: “Triple G. He loses to Triple G.

“Canelo is a good fighter. I’m not hating on the kid. I would have washed up Canelo in two or three rounds.

“If you stand in front of me and try those moves? I’m the kind of guy that stands in front of you and makes you miss and counters your a**. He can’t do it. He tries it.”

Canelo will take on Golovkin next month in a long-awaited trilogy fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 22.
