Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin 3: Eddie Hearn expects 'brutal' trilogy fight

Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn expects to see a ‘brutal’ fight when Canelo Alvarez battles Gennady Golovkin later this year.

After a great deal of build-up and hype, it’s finally been confirmed that Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will meet for the third time on September 17. The two have been dancing around one another for the last few years with the overwhelming expectation being that they’d eventually square off in the trilogy fight – and now, it’s coming to fruition.

They’re known as two of the best fighters of their generation and it’s hard to argue against that. Still, as is the case in any rivalry, it’s always intriguing to know who the dominant force is out of the two.

Their first bout was ruled a split draw with Canelo edging out the rematch on points, but this time around, the rivalry between these foes leads Eddie Hearn to believe it won’t go the distance.

“He’s [Canelo] still the favourite,” Hearn said. 

“Gennady Golovkin sometimes gets a little bit of criticism from the Murata fight, but the guy hadn’t boxed for over 400 days, went out there, he sometimes starts slow and then he just went into overdrive and brutalised the guy.

“I think the move to 168 is going to really help Gennady Golovkin, don’t forget he’s been at 160 for nine, ten years of his career.

“I thought he looked a little bit weight drained out there in Japan, and I think 168 is going to help him.

“I think it will be a brutal fight, this fight won’t go 12 rounds in my opinion.
