Canelo Alvarez says he has at least six years left of fighting as he chases undisputed glory

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez insists he has no plans to retire yet at 31 and ‘it’s all about legacy right now’ ahead of his fight with Dmitry Bivol on May 2.

The Mexican poster-boy achieved his goal of becoming the undisputed super-middleweight world champion last year, after he brutally dispatched Avni Yildirim, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant in quick succession.

Canelo Alvarez, 31, will have the 61st fight of his professional career against Bivol at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday when he makes his walk to the ring.

For context, that’s 11 more than Floyd Mayweather, who retired with an unbeaten record of 50-0.

But the Guadalajara native, who will face the Russian for the WBC (Super) light heavyweight title this Saturday, says he is still in love with the game and thoughts of retiring haven’t entered his head.

When asked how much longer he will carry on fighting, Canelo told TMZ: “I don’t know.

“Hopefully a long time because I’m going to miss boxing when I’m retired.

“I think six years more, seven, five I don’t know.

“It’s all about legacy right now but I don’t know.”

Alvarez will be challenging for the WBA (Super) light heavyweight title – but is adamant Bivol won’t be a walk in the park.

He added: “No, he’s a really good boxer.

“He’s a solid champion at 175.

“It’s a dangerous fight but I like it, I love that kind of challenge, I really like it.

“I believe in my abilities and I’m strong too so I’m confident on that but I believe it’s going to be a really good fight.

“It’s because I love boxing. That’s why. I love boxing.

“I feel I need to accomplish everything to be in the books, the history of boxing, so that’s why I’m here.

“I love what I do.”
