Canelo Alvarez reveals what makes third Gennady Golovkin showdown so ‘personal’
Boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez has explained what makes his third fight against Gennady Golovkin so personal.
As revealed earlier this week, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will write the third chapter of their rivalry on September 17 when they meet for the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring super middleweight titles. It’s the kind of career-defining collision that means so much more than the belts because, in many ways, it’ll help shape the legacy of Canelo and GGG for years to come.
Their first fight was close, the second fight was even closer, and both were Fight of the Year contenders – which is probably why there’s such an insane amount of hype heading into the trilogy.
The last couple of months have seen more and more animosity bubble to the surface between these two all-time greats. As per Canelo during an interview with DAZN, that’s one of the reasons why this bout is so important.
“It’s always been very personal with him. That will never go away,” Alvarez said. “After we finished the two fights, it still feels the same [very personal]. He [Golovkin] has never stopped talking about me. If you see, I never mentioned his name. I’ve always been in his mouth, he’s always talked about me, and that makes it even more personal. The fact that there is this rivalry puts an extra element there. It makes me train harder. I try harder. Personally, I sometimes feel better that it exists.
“I do it. I risk everything to keep making history when I don’t need to risk anything. I’ve already achieved so many things. I’m in a position where I don’t have to risk anything, and I still do it, and nobody does that when they are in a position like the one I’m in. So personally, I still feel I’m the best in the world.”
