Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo has been hailed ahead of Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold after his latest showing.

The 27-year-old put in a man-of-the-match performance against Brentford as their quest to regain the title continued.

It was a hard-fought win for City as they extended their run at the summit of the English top-flight thanks to a Riyad Mahrez penalty before Kevin de Bruyne capitalised on some poor defending from the visitors.

The Portuguese international marked his return to league action by picking up accolades from broadcasters BT Sport and the official City channels.

Cancelo was a constant threat throughout for Pep Guardiola's side tormenting the Bees full-back as he, amongst others, provided the quality that saw them through against Thomas Frank's valiant side.

For Ederson, it was a largely uneventful match for the shot-stopper but emphasises the solidity at the back for the league leaders.

Nearest challengers Liverpool are due to host Leicester City on Thursday but the win for Guardiola's side stretches their lead at the top back to 12 points.
