Cancelo return, Mahrez missing, Kovacic first day - five things spotted from Man City return to pre-season training

After three days of waiting, Manchester City fans have finally got a glimpse into the start of pre-season training this week.

City players returned to training on Monday, but had to wait until Wednesday to get the first look at which players returned to the City Football Academy. When footage arrived, fans were treated to an insight into Mateo Kovacic's first day at the club which saw him meet his new teammates and manager after signing from Chelsea for £25m.

City's preparations for the new season are currently taking place amid uncertainty around the futures of a number of senior players. Bernardo Silva still wants to leave if possible, while Aymeric Laporte and Joao Cancelo may also be looking for exits. Kyle Walker and Riyad Mahrez are both reportedly close to leaving the club, and Mahrez was the only player not to feature in City's video charting the return to training.

Erling Haaland looked in good spirits as he shared jokes with Jack Grealish, Julian Alvarez and Maximo Perrone, in between massages with City's medical team.

We've looked over the footage to pick out five talking points from City's return to pre-season training.

All eyes were on new midfielder Mateo Kovacic, who arrived as Ilkay Gundogan departed. Kovacic was seen meeting his new teammates, before taking to the training pitch and getting involved in team drills.

During a break, the cameras showed manager Pep Guardiola taking Kovacic to one side for a few moments, getting a point across to the Croatian. City will get to see Kovacic for the first time at the weekend when they take on Yokohama in Tokyo on Sunday.
