Canadian women beat Fiji to set up semifinal against New Zealand at rugby 7s event in France
The Canadian women's rugby sevens squad advanced to the Cup semifinals at the HSBC SVNS Series stop in Bordeaux, France with a 29-14 win over Fiji on Saturday.
Savannah Bauder led Canada with three first-half tries and two conversions, while Carmen Izyk and Pamphinette Buisa each added a try in the second half.
Canada, which led 19-7 at halftime, grew its lead to 22 points before surrendering the final score of the game to Fiji's Reapi Ulunisau in the 12th minute.
Mariana Talatoka accounted for Fiji's other try and conversion late in the first half.
The Canadians will move on to face New Zealand, who beat them for third place at last weekend's stop in Valladolid, Spain. The match is scheduled for Sunday morning at Stade de Bordeaux.
Australia will face the United States in the other semifinal.
Canada finished pool play with a 2-1 record, scoring wins over Spain (14-12) and Great Britain (35-14), capped off by a 33-22 loss to the U.S.
The Canadian women — the 2024 Olympic silver medallists — also finished fourth at the Hong Kong leg in April.
