Canadian wheelchair sprinter Cody Fournie rolls to 2nd gold medal in Paris

Canada's Cody Fournie is back atop the Paralympic podium.

Fournie, the 35-year-old from Victoria, won the men's T51 100 metres in a Paralympic-record time of 19.63 seconds on Friday at the Stade de France.

Belgium's Peter Genyn claimed silver in 20.47 seconds, while Finland's Toni Pisspanen secured bronze at 21.14 seconds.

The Canadian Fournie previously won gold in the T51 200m.

Fournie's gold medal was the Canadian team's fourth at the track and seventh medal overall. Across all sports, Canada now owns 23 podium appearances — two more than its output at Tokyo 2020.

Fournier earned a silver medal in the 100 metres at this year's world championship in Kobe, Japan.

He began wheelchair racing a few years ago after switching from wheelchair rugby.

WATCH | Fournie talks about latest victory:

Canada's Jesse Zesseu won silver in his Paralympic debut on Friday in the men's discus F37 final at the Paris Games.

The 25-year-old earned Canada's 21st medal and seventh silver in Paris after beating the reigning Paralympic champion for second place.

Zesseu, from Toronto, finished behind Uzbekistan's Tolibboy Yuldashev after launching his sixth and final throw 53.24 metres.

Zesseu's third throw of 52.81m was ultimately enough to secure the silver medal, as Pakistan's Ali Haider fell 0.7 metres short of the mark on his last chance to defend his title.

"Everything in the last three years since I started Para sport was to do this. I have no words, it's just incredible," Zesseu said.
