Canadian GP: Two winners and two losers in Montreal

The Canadian Grand Prix made a welcome return at the weekend and provided an enjoyable race, with the battle for the lead going to the very final lap.

A Safety Car towards the end of the race bunched the field up and meant that Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz would duel for victory, with the Dutchman keeping the Spaniard at bay and sealing an important victory in terms of the championship.

Who were the other winners in Montreal, though? And who’d rather forget the weekend altogether? We take a look now in our latest winners and losers piece…

Winner – Mercedes

Mercedes started the weekend massively on the backfoot in Montreal, with Lewis Hamilton in particular struggling for pace.

He labelled the car ‘undriveable’ thanks to the experimental set-up they’d put on his car, but by Sunday both Mercs were looking much stronger and they delivered a P3 and P4, with Hamilton back on the podium for the first time since Bahrain.

A positive weekend in the end, and they’ll look to build on that at Silverstone.

Loser – Haas

Whilst Mercedes’ weekend started badly and finished great, Haas’ did the opposite.

Both drivers aced the wet qualifying session on Saturday to line up P5 and P6 – their joint-best qualifying as a collective since the team joined the grid, but from there on things went downhill.

A little touch with Lewis Hamilton damaged Kevin Magnussen’s front wing and he was given the black and orange flag, meaning he had to pit and drop down the order, eventually finishing 17th.

Mick Schumacher, meanwhile, was in the hunt for points before a power unit issue consigned him to retirement – if it could go wrong it did for Haas on Sunday.

Winner – Zhou Guanyu
