Canada's Warner, LePage sit in podium position in early stages of decathlon

Click on the video player above to watch live action from the World Athletics Championships, beginning at 12:20 p.m. ET. CBC Sports' Anastasia Bucsis hosts the afternoon session, which includes coverage of the men's decathlon, 4x100m relay heats, and 200m final.

Canada's Damian Warner and Pierce LePage are off to strong starts in the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

Germany's Leo Neugebauer currently holds the top spot with 2,908 points, but Warner (2,812) and LePage (2,784) aren't far behind.

Warner, the 33-year-old from London, Ont, was leading the decathlon through five events at the 2022 world championships before pulling up with a hamstring injury while running in the inside lane of the 400 metres.

But he's off to a fast start as he seeks redemption in Hungary, winning the 100 (10.32 seconds) and placing third in long jump (7.77 metres) before a season's best throw landed him 10th in shot put (15.03 metres).

LePage, the 27-year-old from Whitby, Ont., was fourth in the 100 (10.45 seconds), eighth in long jump (7.49 metres) and third place in shot put (15.81 metres).

Action from Budapest resumes at 12:20 p.m. ET, when Canada's 4x100 men's relay team will begin its gold-medal defence in heats and Andre De Grasse will run in the men's 200.
