Canada's Sarah Mitton falls just short in shot put event at Harry Jerome Classic in B.C.

Paris-bound Canadian shot putter Sarah Mitton fell short of her third straight win on Saturday, losing by just 0.18 metres at the Harry Jerome Classic in Burnaby, B.C.

The Olympic medal contender was bested by Jamaica's Danniel Thomas-Dodd, who launched it 19 metres on her second of six attempts at Swangard Stadium.

Thomas-Dodd was narrowly beaten by Mitton on Thursday at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational.

Mitton, a 27-year-old from Brooklyn, N.S., lowered her national women's record on May 11 with a world-leading throw of 20.68 at a meet in Fleetwood, Pa. The world indoor champion has won eight of 13 events this year, surpassing 20 metres four times.

She is ranked second in the world behind two-time defending world champion Chase Jackson of the United States.

The men's and women's hammer throw events, featuring Canada's Rowan Hamilton and Jillian Weir, will take place Sunday at McLeod Stadium in Langley, B.C.

All Canadian athletes have through June 30 to qualify for the Paris Olympics. The Canadian track and field Olympic trials kick off June 26.
