Canada's Mitton wins women's shot put, Arop runs to world-leading 800m at Paris Diamond League stop

Canadian shot putter Sarah Mitton edged reigning Olympic champion Yemisi Mabry of Germany to win the women's event at the Diamond League stop in Paris on Sunday.

Mitton, from Brooklyn, N.S., was in second place behind Mabry before launching her third of six attempts 19.99 metres for the longest throw at the Meeting de Paris. Mabry also delivered her best toss in the third round but it fell 0.06m short of Mitton's mark.

Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands finished in third place after her third throw travelled 19.89m.

The 30-year-old Mitton, a two-time indoor world champion, surpassed the 19-metre mark on five of her six throws at Stade Charlety.

Mitton had a season's best mark of 20.42m at the season-opening Diamond League meet in Shanghai, where she finished third. Her personal best is 20.68m, set in February 2025.

Edmonton's Marco Arop followed up Mitton's win with a world-leading time in the men's 800m.

The Olympic men's silver medallist and former world champion in the distance clocked a time of one minute 41.84 seconds — 1.3 seconds faster than his previous season’s best from the Stockholm Diamond League event earlier this month.
