Canada's Cynthia Appiah slides to monobob bronze in season's final World Cup

Canada's Cynthia Appiah saved her best performance for last.

The Toronto native won a bronze medal at the season-ending World Cup monobob event on Friday in Lake Placid, N.Y., marking her first podium appearance of the season.

Appiah, 33, posted a two-run combined time of one minute 59.13 seconds, holding off fourth-place Laura Nolte of Germany by just three-hundredths of a second.

Australia's Bree Walker captured gold in 1:58.67, while American Elena Meyers Taylor scored silver in 1:58.91.

Appiah placed third in the season-long monobob standings last year, reaching five podiums across eight starts.

Last off-season, though, she returned to athletics after a 10-year absence, eventually placing third at Canadian nationals in shot put with a throw of 14.84 metres.

Action from Lake Placid continues Friday with the two-man bobsleigh heats slated for 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. ET on CBCSports.ca, the CBC Sports app and CBC Gem.
