Canada's Auger-Aliassime advances to European Open final

Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime is off to the European Open final.

The Montreal native defeated Belgium's Raphael Collignon 7-6 (2), 6-4 in the semifinals of the tennis tournament.

Auger-Aliassime fired eight aces and had just one double fault while winning 78 per cent of his first-serve points.

He also converted on one of his three break-point chances in the one-hour, 45-minute match.

Collignon had five aces but four double faults and did not have a single break-point opportunity in the loss.

The second-seeded Auger-Aliassime will face third-seeded Jiri Lehecka of Czechia in the final on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Canada's Denis Shapovalov fell just short of playing for an ATP title.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., native lost 6-3, 6-4 to Norway's Casper Ruud in the semifinals of the Stockholm Open tennis tournament on Saturday.

The third-seeded Shapovalov had six aces and four double faults, while breaking on one of five chances.

Ruud, the second seed in the tournament, had two aces to double fault and converted three of his six break-point chances.

The Norwegian will next face France's Ugo Humbert in Sunday's final.

Humbert moved on via walkover against top-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark. Rune suffered an injury in the second set.
