Canada's Alexis Guimond wins 2nd straight Para alpine event in Austria
Canadian Para skier Alexis Guimond won gold in the men's standing super-G race at a World Cup stop Friday in Saalbach, Austria.
Guimond, from Gatineau, Que., finished first in a time of one minute and three seconds to capture victory. Arthur Bauchet of France (1:03.06) and Russia's Aleksei Bugaev (1:03.81) took silver and bronze, respectively.
Guimond, who finished with gold in a downhill race Wednesday, has won all three super-G races he's entered this season and has seven podium finishes in 10 World Cup races.
“It was a good race today,” Guimond said in a release. “The course set-up was challenging. In many spots, I felt on the edge and managed to keep my speed through some tough sections. The back-to-back wins are definitely shaping my confidence this season. I feel strong on my speed skis
"The team has great momentum and it’s exciting to be a part of it.”
Fellow Canadian Kurt Oatway took bronze in the men's sitting event, finishing in a time of 1:04.75.
Jeroen Kampschreur of the Netherlands took gold in 1:03.24, while Takeshi Suzuki (1:04.53) snagged silver.
Oatway, of Calgary, had been dealing with injury, and was pleased with his result in his first race of the season.
“First race back since being injured in November feels good,” Oatway said. “Being back on the podium after missing a big chunk of the World Cup season, shows me I have a solid foundation of skill to fall back on and will let me build momentum headed deeper into the World Cup season and on to the Paralympic Games in Cortina.”
Also Friday, Mollie Jepsen of West Vancouver, B.C., finished with bronze in the women's standing super-G with a time of 1:09.26 seconds for her seventh podium in 10 races this season.
