Can Alex Telles play for Sevilla vs Manchester United and other Europa League rules explained

Manchester United defender Alex Telles can play against them tonight for Sevilla despite being on loan.

Telles joined the La Liga club on a season long switch from Old Trafford in the summer. The full-back has so far made 29 appearances for the Spanish side but has struggled in recent weeks to be a regular after suffering from a knee injury in December.

Despite being contracted to the Reds, Telles can feature against them tonight for Sevilla in the Europa League. MEN Sport has taken a look at why that is and other rules of the competition.

Unlike in the Premier League, UEFA has announced that players can feature against their parent clubs in their competitions. United could have avoided this by including a clause in the deal preventing him from playing.

However, it is widely understood that this clause was not included meaning the 30-year-old is eligible to play this evening.

United's duo are at risk of suspension because they have picked up two yellow cards already in the Europa League. UEFA rules state that if a player picks up three cautions, they will serve a one-match ban.

After the completion of the quarter-finals, all bookings are scrapped ahead of the semi-finals. However, if Casemiro or Fernandes were to pick-up a booking next week in Seville, they would miss the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals should United qualify.

Several United players find themselves on one booking and thus, if booked in both legs of the Sevilla quarter-final, they would miss a potential semi-final first leg. These players are; Fred, Tyrell Malacia, Diogo Dalot, Wout Weghorst, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Facundo Pellistri and David de Gea.
