Cambuslang Harriers athlete qualifies for World Triathlon Championships
Cambuslang Harriers athlete Kirsty O’Brien has qualified for the World Triathlon Championships final later this season after a fine performance at the World Triathlon Sprint event in Germany.
By finishing ninth W40 overall and second British athlete, O’Brien achieved automatic qualification for the event in Pontevedra, Spain, in September.
The following week, O’Brien scored a convincing W40 win at the Scottish National Aquathlon Championships at Balloch Castle country Park, which involved a 750km swim in Loch Lomond and a 5k run.
Zach Seenan also took part in the Aquathlon Championships, and as the athletes emerged from the swim, the debut season athlete was in 13th place, sliced through the competition to finish second-fastest, winning the overall silver medal and the under-20 gold.
There have been several other competitions over recent weeks involving Harriers athletes.
Ten club athletes took part in the midweek Scottish Veterans 5k Road Race at Clydebank.
First Cambuslang runner home was M35 Steven Fitzpatrick in 16.05, followed by M50 Mark King (16.59), with leading M60 Dave Thom seven seconds behind King.
Both W65 Erica Christie (23.12) and M70 Sandy Eaglesham (23.27) were first in their respective age groups, with Peter Ogden second M70.
Andrew Carey, Stan MacKenzie and Katie Clubb raced in the Inverness Campus 5k.
Carey lowered his personal best (PB) by eight seconds in the ‘A’ event, taking eighth place in 15.19.
Taking part in the ‘B’ race, MacKenzie was second overall and first M60 and Clubb clinched the first lady award.
Gavin Smith qualified for the Senior Men AAA 1500m Championships, but monsoon conditions, tactics in the race and two collisions saw him finish fourth, narrowly missing out on automatic entry
