Callum McGregor admits Celtic relief over Hampden pitch as Angeball clears up potential Rangers 'grey area'

Callum McGregor says a fresh Hampden Park surface would be a welcome sight to Celtic in their quest to beating Rangers at Hampden.

The pair face off in Viaplay Cup final action this Sunday afternoon as McGregor looks to lift the famous trophy like he did in 2021 when Ange Postecoglou's side won this showpiece against Hibs. They will defend their crown against Michael Beale's in-form side, and both will hope for a better playing surface after stormy weather contributed to a bobbly and cut-up Hampden turf.

Celtic's captain is aware it provided a debate in the days after their January battle with Kilmarnock, but speaking to club TV, insists all he is bothered about is it looking okay now: "There was obviously a lot of talking points after the semi-finals. Good to see that it is looking better and hopefully come Sunday we will have a really good playing surface to play on."

Postecoglou's side are nine points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership heading into this one, losing once domestically all season. McGregor says 'Angeball' is clear on what are the key pillars of success, regardless of the opposition.

He added: "I am looking forward to the game obviously, it is a massive occasion and something I think all the squad are looking forward to. Can't wait for Sunday.
