Callum Brittain gives honest opinion on what could have prevented Barnsley relegation battle

Barnsley defender Callum Brittain has said that they would not be in their current position if head coach Poya Asbaghi had arrived at the club earlier in the season.

Barnsley currently sit second bottom of the Championship, five points off safety.

Whilst they still have a large task on their hands, a recent run with just two losses in six and more importantly 3 wins, has seen a bit of hope instilled into the fight.

Barnsley started the season with Markus Schopp as their manager but after a run of seven defeats and no win in 13 games, he was sacked at the start of November.

Asbaghi was then appointed and how slowly but surely worked things back up a bit at Barnsley. Speaking about his current manager, Brittain told the Yorkshire Post: “I totally believe we would not be in this position if he was here at the beginning of the season.

“He has come into a difficult environment and it was one which was very hard to turn very quickly, especially with a young group of players.

“I am probably one of the more experienced and am only 23. Obviously, with players like me, my head has gone at times this season and it’s hard to turn it around.”

Brittain is full of praise for his current manager and feels he has helped the squad both on and off the pitch which has led to their improvement. He said: “He has come in and been excellent and has not lost his head and come in and given anyone the hairdryer treatment.

“He’s tried to build confidence and spoken to individuals and got to know them.

“We as players need to give everything on the pitch as he is the guy who has tried to regain that confidence.”

The Verdict:

It’s hard to disagree with the Barnsley player here. Of course, we’ll never know how it would’ve gone but it’s clear to see
