Call of Duty 2023 release reportedly delayed until 2024

The 2023 release of Call of Duty will be delayed until 2024 and will not launch an annual game for the first time in almost 20 years, according to reports.

Treyarch, who have been responsible for the development of the Black Ops games over the years, are leading the charge on the next major release in the long-running series.

In between this, Activision are set to bring out a new game later this year which is believed to be a reboot of Modern Ware 2, arguably the most popular game of the entire franchise.

The last time we saw a gap in releases was back in 2005 when the first game launched two years before the second Call of Duty title was unleashed onto the gaming market.

Call of Duty recently confirmed that Warzone 2 is in the works, which could either be launched with the MW2 reboot or the next installation.

It’s not often that we see Call of Duty taking a gap year, but it looks like that’s what will be happening.

According to a report from Bloomberg, Activision are looking to call time on their typical annual release schedule following the disappointing sales figures that Vanguard generated, which was heavily criticised by reviewers and players on Metacritic.

Some initially thought that this decision was taken following the recent $70 billion (£51.4 billion) acquisition by Microsoft, but this is apparently not the case as Activision have retained full developmental control on the series.

This move could have a seismic effect on the gaming industry as a whole with the absence of a Call of Duty release around October and November time each year, with each title regularly finding its way as one of the best sellers.
