Calcutta Cup coming to East Kilbride for rugby festival

Rugby fans can get up close to the prestigious Calcutta Cup this weekend at the East Kilbride Rugby Club festival.

The action-packed festival on Sunday is aimed at showcasing girls and women’s teams, attracting club sides from all around the country, involving around 300 players from the ages of 12 upwards.

And the Calcutta Cup will be at Torrance House from 12pm onwards for fans to get their picture taken with it.

The trophy is currently held by Scotland following a 20-17 win over England in February, where former Calderglen High School pupil Jonny Gray helped the national side to back-to-back wins over the Auld Enemy in the Six Nations.

The festival kicks off at 10.30am and EK’s women’s team will take part alongside the ‘Queen Bees’ section for under-12 to under-18s.

There will also be teams attending from Oban, Cartha, Biggar, Hamilton, Marr, Wigtownshire, Irvine, Strathaven, Waysiders, Kilmarnock, Dumfries and Greenock.

But the festival will also be a chance for East Kilbride to promote the launch of a new women’s team for next season.

Women’s section coach Elaine Martin said: “At our festival there will be passion, competition and, as always, great fun for competitors and spectators alike as we celebrate the sporting talent on show.

“We are striving to create an enjoyable environment for our young women to flourish in the backdrop of competitive sport.”
