Bury student goes viral on TikTok with maths tips - racking up 20 million views

An aspiring teacher who shares tips to help students with their GCSE and A-level exams has gone viral on TikTok.

Harry Surplus, from Bury , has been creating videos and livestreams to help those studying maths. The 19-year-old began making videos for fun – but has now racked up 20m views and 100k followers on the app.

Harry, who is currently studying maths at the University of Manchester, said he “never expected” his account to go viral but loves knowing he has helped so many students. “It was kind of an overnight thing,” he told the Manchester Evening News.

“The second maths video I made was for GCSE and that was the one that first went viral. The video quickly reached over 1m views and gained so much attention. Over 12,000 comments came in from students saying they had learnt more from it than they ever had at school.

“I then started going live on TikTok to work through exam papers and have had 37,000 students come in and out of the livestream on many occasions. I have had over 19m views across all of my videos and recently his 100,000 followers which I’m very grateful for; I can’t believe I have all these students following me.”

Harry, who hopes to become an A-level maths teacher following his graduation, says he regularly receives messages from students after their exams thanking him for his help. “Students are learning maths without realising,” he continued.

“They are most likely procrastinating scrolling on TikTok, then a maths video from me pops up. It’s amazing to know that I have helped so many achieve in their exams. After each exam I get DMs from students thanking me for the videos and telling me they
