Burnley manager gives Ashley Westwood update after horror injury amid relegation battle

Burnley star Ashley Westwood was taken to hospital after suffering what appeared to be an horrific injury at West Ham this afternoon.

Caretaker boss Mike Jackson said he is "just hoping he is OK" after the 1-1 draw, which moved his side three points behind Everton. The Clarets led for much of the game and missed a penalty but Jackson still hailed the outcome as a "terrific result".

Speaking after the match, he told Sky: "It's a terrific result. Obviously we had the incident with Ash as well, which affected the group, so to come back from that little bit of disappointment as well for him... we are just hoping he's OK so given everything what's gone on this week and happened in the game today it's a good point."

Jackson took over after the shock dismissal of long-term manager Sean Dyche this week. Burnley, Everton's biggest threat in the battle for Premier League survival, looked set to close to within one point of Everton for much of their game on Sunday. But after Wout Weghorst gave them the lead Maxwel Cornet missed a penalty and Tomas Soucek later levelled for the hosts.

Jackson concluded the result was a "good point" and said he now had his "fingers crossed" Westwood's injury was not as bad as feared. The midfielder was injured while challenging for a loose ball with Nikola Vlasic, who was left in tears and had to be consoled by teammates following the incident.

Burnley will now have an anxious wait to learn whether the 32-year-old can play any part in the remainder of the season. Westwood has been a regular for the Clarets since joining in January 2017 and has played 27 times in the Premier League this season.
