Burnley ball, attacking intent and inside the new Clarets set-up under Vincent Kompany

VK Ball is here.

Burnley played their first and only public pre-season friendly on Friday night, seeing off Shrewsbury Town 3-1 and giving us all the chance to see Vincent Kompany's Clarets in action for the first time. The manager wants to be attacking and is determined to deliver goals, goals and more goals.

And, in the first half in particular, there was clear evidence of the new manager's game-plan and style. Burnley lined up in a 4-2-2-2 formation with two sitting midfielders and two attack minded ones. It meant the full backs were asked to play high when in possession, with a central midfielder - Josh Cullen in the first half and Jack Cork in the second - dropping into the back three to start attacks.

It will take some getting used to for Burnley fans who have had a decade of the Sean Dyche blueprint. Kompany is not cut from the same cloth.

Short passes into the centre halves, who split and allow one of the sitting midfielders to receive the ball deep, will be the main avenue. The full backs move high and wide to open up the pitch and can expect to see plenty of possession with the six central players having the freedom to interchange.

There were times in the first half when Jay Rodriguez dropped in to link play and the attacking midfielders advanced into the space - Samuel Bastien scoring from exactly that kind of link-up play. The absent Scott Twine and Dwight McNeil will be licking their lips at playing in the two-pronged 10 position while Rodriguez and Barnes showed they are capable of playing the short, sharp, pass and move football
