Bulls' Peirson fires in Shield v Redbacks

An aggressive half-century from Queensland captain Jimmy Peirson has allowed his side to stamp their authority against South Australia in the rain-affected Sheffield Shield match in Brisbane.

The quick scoring allowed the home side to declare at 8-305, with South Australia 1-9 at lunch on day three.

Newly-appointed SA captain Henry Hunt fell for a first-ball duck to the bowling of Gurinder Sandhu.

Bulls skipper Peirson earlier led the way towards a declaration, crunching eight boundaries in scoring 65 off only 45 deliveries.

It was a marked contrast from day two when the home side battled their way to 4-158, scoring at just above two an over against an inexperienced Redbacks attack.

Peirson found willing support in Jack Clayton as the pair added 102 for the sixth wicket at better than a run a ball.

Clayton seemed set to back up his century on debut a fortnight ago, only to be caught and bowled for 85 off the bowling of spinner Nathan McSweeney.

Despite some threatening cloud cover at the Gabba, the rain that washed out day one and the opening session on day two stayed away.

Peirson's dismissal - caught in the deep off Nathan McAndrew - kick-started a late-order collapse as the home side lost 3-3 in pursuit of quick runs.
