Bruno Fernandes showcases his best position with moment of brilliance against Atletico Madrid

Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid won’t go down as one of Bruno Fernandes’ finest games.

He struggled to get into the outing for large portions, cutting a frustrated figure as Atletico outplayed, outfought and outmanoeuvred United. Especially in the first half when it seemed like the home side could score at will.

Yet United somehow kept the scoreline to just 1-0, and then Fernandes showed why he’s still so important to United.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Fernandes received the ball after a well-worked series of passes between Jadon Sancho, Fred and Cristiano Ronaldo down the left-hand channel. Fernandes was in a central position and sprinted into the Atletico half.

No one charged him down, and Fernandes kept on going before sliding a slightly under-hit through ball into the feet of Anthony Elanga. Atleti defender Reinildo Mandava should’ve intercepted the ball, but he somehow missed the ball.

Elanga was now in the clear, and he angled his shot past Jan Oblak to give United a vital foothold in the tie.

It was yet another example of the quality Fernandes can provide, even when he isn’t on top form.

Fernandes has endured an up-and-down season. While his output hasn’t hit the heights of his first 12 months at United, he’s still scored nine goals and provided 14 assists in all competitions.

Moreover, the constant rotating of positions by first Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick has hardly helped. Fernandes has operated everywhere from a No.10 to a deep-lying playmaker via a brief stint on the right-side of United's attacking three.
