Bruno Fernandes listed as Man Utd captain over Harry Maguire by UEFA in awkward mix-up

UEFA have listed Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United's captain in an awkward mix-up ahead of their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils are set to face Diego Simeone's side at the Wanda Metropolitano in the first leg of their last 16 tie.

A lot of the pre-match talk has been occupied by Harry Maguire and his captaincy with reports that Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be named the new skipper.

And more fuel has been added to that fire as Fernandes was named the captain against Madrid by UEFA, while United has Maguire down as the man with the armband.

.

Mirror Sport exclusively revealed that Maguire is involved in a dressing room power struggle for the skipper’s armband with Ronaldo.

United skipper Maguire is said to feel increasingly undermined by the 37-year-old superstar’s huge influence within the dressing-room, particularly with the younger players.

There is now a growing belief within the Old Trafford dressing-room that it is inevitable Ronaldo will replace Maguire – who has been struggling for form – as captain.

A United source said: “Originally, Ronaldo was asking players to back Harry. But the problem is the manager now wants Ronaldo to mentor all these younger players.

“That’s left Harry in no man’s land, as he’s the captain and having to say and follow whatever Ronaldo says, to keep everything sweet.”

And Ralf Rangnick has admitted he can give Maguire no guarantees about carrying on as Manchester United captain beyond the end of the season.

He said: “About the captaincy, we have a captain in Harry Maguire and he will stay the captain until the end of the season for sure.

“What will happen in the next one, two, three and four years, I don't know.

“For me, it's not of any importance.
