Bruno Fernandes insists ‘the standards of this club must be higher’ after Manchester United’s latest setback

Bruno Fernandes has insisted that Manchester United must have “higher standards” after dropping more points in the race for Champions League football.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Leicester left the Red Devils facing the real possibility of not only missing out on fourth place, but also on European football altogether.

Having failed to convert a big chance to open the scoring, Fernandes helped create Fred’s equaliser before Leicester had a late winner controversially denied by VAR. United sit sixth, with a three-point gap up to fourth and down to eighth.

“Everyone is disappointed," the Portuguese midfielder told MUTV.

“This result was not the result that we want but there is nothing we can do now.

“We have to look ahead to the next game and understand that the standard of this club has to be higher and better, and we know that we are capable of that.”

A trip to Everton is on the immediate horizon for United, who are also out of both remaining cup competitions, and Fernandes wants his team to target eight-straight wins to see out the season.

“You have to think [about] winning every game we have going forward,” he added. “But now, [we need to be] thinking about the next one and not rushing too much because we have to think game by game.”
