Brothers charged with attempted murder in suspected shooting

Two brothers have been charged with attempted murder following a suspected shooting in Oldham earlier this week.

Officers were called to Horsedge Street, near the junction with Henshaw Street, just before 8pm on Wednesday evening (July 5) following reports of an alleged firearms discharge. Residents later told the M.E.N they heard a 'very loud bang' which they initially thought had been cars crashing or fireworks.

Daniel Whelan, 31, of Unsworth Way, and Alex Whelan, 26, of Great Gable Close have been remanded in custody and are due to appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on Monday (July 10).

They have both been charged with attempted murder and an offence under the Firearms Act. No injuries were reported at the scene.

Chief Superintendent Philip Hutchinson, from GMP’s Oldham district, said: “Our investigation into the discharge of a potential firearm is moving at pace.

“We would like to thank members of the public for supporting our investigation, officers have been working tirelessly to follow lines of enquiries.

“This is believed to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community. Thankfully, no one was injured.

“Officers in Oldham and across Greater Manchester will continue to take robust action to protect the public and anyone with information about this incident or other criminal activity can contact police directly by calling 101 or by using the Live Chat service on our website.
