Brooklyn Nets coach Jacque Vaughn agrees to multiyear extension

Brooklyn Nets coach Jacque Vaughn has agreed to a multiyear extension that will keep him under contract through the 2026-27 season, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Nets announced the extension Tuesday but did not disclose terms.

Vaughn's existing deal was set to expire after this season and included a team option for 2023-24.

Vaughn has coached the Nets to a 32-19 record after being promoted Nov. 1 to replace Steve Nash and has led the team through a transitional overhaul highlighted by the recent trades of superstars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant.

«Jacque has made an immediate and immeasurable impact on our entire organization since assuming the role of head coach earlier this season,» Nets general manager Sean Marks said in a statement released by the team. «On the court, he's clearly demonstrated his leadership through his ability to connect and communicate at a very high level while displaying tremendous instincts for the game. As a person, they don't come any better than Jacque.»

The Nets, with four new players in their starting lineup because of the blockbuster trades, have gone 2-2 under Vaughn since dealing Durant to the Suns on Feb. 8. Irving was traded to the Mavericks two days earlier.

Brooklyn is 34-24 overall and fifth in the Eastern Conference.

«His character is impeccable, and there is not a better representative for our team and our borough,» Marks said in his statement. «We are thrilled to have Jacque lead the Nets for years to come.»

A widely respected longtime assistant, Vaughn initially was appointed as Nash's interim replacement before being named the Nets' full-time head coach on Nov. 9. He previously spent two-plus seasons as the Magic's head coach from 2012 to 2015.
