British tourist dies in Thailand after getting lost walking to the shops

A man from Liverpool tragically lost his life after becoming disoriented in a wooded area while on holiday in Thailand. Michael Jackson, 40, was found collapsed in undergrowth after he left the holiday residence where he was staying with two friends.

Mr Jackson, who worked as a road surfacer and lived on Western Avenue in Speke, had travelled to Thailand to attend a boxing match on December 8 and was staying in a villa.

An inquest at Liverpool coroner's court today revealed that on the night of his arrival, the 40 year old attended a beach club party, staying up until about 2 or 3am, during which time he consumed alcohol and drugs. He left the villa later to go to the shops but never made it back.

On December 9, Mr Jackson was found in nearby woodland, bearing "numerous cuts and scratches to his body".

The court was told that it is believed Mr Jackson had mistakenly taken a wrong turn while walking to the shops and got lost in the thickly forested area. He was rushed to Ko Samui Hospital, located in the Ko Samui district of Surat Thani, where he received treatment for kidney failure, reports the Liverpool Echo.

His condition worsened, and his girlfriend Stephanie Draper said that Mr Jackson was "hallucinating and saying strange things". On December 14, he suffered respiratory failure and cardiac arrest, leading to him being placed in an induced coma.

Tragically, he passed away the next day, on December 15, with the medical cause of death recorded as "severe sepsis".
