British Gas sends millions of customers message over price hikes

British Gas has notified its customers about a significant hike in energy bills from October amidst rising living costs. The price jump, just as winter approaches and with Christmas in sight, could add stress to many UK families.

On average, energy tariffs are set to increase by £149 from October. However, British Gas is offering its customers a chance to lock in their rates and sidestep the looming surge in costs, reports Birmingham Live.

Following the latest update from Ofgem, the energy provider has posted an advisory message on its website. The message from British Gas reads: "Ofgem will increase the energy price cap by £149 in October. Secure a fixed tariff now that's below the cap. And, if we offer a cheaper deal in the future, you can switch for free."

As households brace for higher energy expenses, other major suppliers are also likely to present fixed-deal offers. Nevertheless, financial experts caution customers to carefully evaluate these deals to ensure they align with their needs.

While fixed tariffs offer a stable rate for a designated period, there's a risk that consumers might end up paying more over time if average prices fluctuate. The Energy Price Cap adjusts every quarter, influencing bill amounts to vary periodically. For many, this latest cap revision will compound the frustrations following a brief respite in July when bills had decreased.
