Bristol City expert delivers 'enigmatic' verdict on Sheffield Wednesday target Tyreeq Bakinson

Sheffield Wednesday are hopeful of finalising a deal to sign Bristol City midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson. Yorkshire Live understands the Owls are in talks to bring in Bakinson on a permanent deal

The 23-year-old midfielder has fallen out of favour at Ashton Gate and spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town. He scored two goals in 14 starts and three substitute appearances for the Suffolk club as they secured a top half finish.

Ipswich decided against activating their option to buy clause and Bakinson returned to Bristol this summer. Robins boss Nigel Pearson has previously criticised Bakinson's attitude and has made it clear that the Londoner is not part of his first team plans. He is currently back at City training with the club's Under-23s.

Yorkshire Live caught up with James Piercy, the sports editor at Bristol Live, to get the lowdown on Wednesday's potential new signing.

A deep-lying midfielder passer with great vision and an ability to dictate tempo and spread the play. He has that natural languid style, which is a blessing and a curse, but when he’s on it, can deliver some lovely diagonal passes between the lines.

He’ll be branded a “defensive midfielder” but in reality he’s more of a holding midfielder because, in truth, the defensive side of his game is probably where he falls down a bit. He could do with being more aggressive and using his frame proactively, although he does make the odd impressive interception in front of the defence that can get the team back in possession.
