Brentford 'are confident of extending Christian Eriksen's contract'

Brentford are confident they will agree to extend Christian Eriksen's contract beyond this summer, according to reports. 

The 30-year-old made a triumphant return to football in January when he signed a six-month contract with Brentford after suffering a heart attack while representing Denmark at last summer’s European Championships.

The midfielder was forced to leave Inter Milan as he was unable to play in Italy with a heart defibrillator but has since made three appearances for Brentford. 

He has since provided an assist for the Bees against Burnley before scoring on his return to international duty with Denmark on Saturday. 

Brentford are keen to extend his deal and believe they are in a strong position to retain his services, according to The Times. 

The club are yet to make a formal offer to the Dane but they reportedly believe that working alongside his countrymen, manager Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Matthias Jorgensen has made him loyal to the club.  

Brentford reportedly believe that Eriksen will wait until the end of the season to make a decision on his future. 

The club are currently trying to retain their place in the Premier League as they sit 15th with eight games remaining. 

Frank's side sit eight points clear of 18th place Watford but have played three more games than Burnley and Everton who could have the chance to leapfrog them. 

Since his arrival, Eriksen has helped Brentford to two successive wins for the first time this season. 

The former Spurs player is set to captain Denmark in a friendly match against Serbia on Tuesday.
