Brendan Rodgers called to apologise after saying 'good girl' to BBC Scotland reporter
Brendan Rodgers has been called to apologise after calling a BBC Scotland reporter a ‘good girl’ in a post match interview.
For Women Scotland organisation campaigners accused the Celtic manager of ‘casual sexism’ and for an apology to be given to Jane Lewis. Their exchange took place on the Sportsound radio programme on Sunday after Celtic’s 3-1 win against Motherwell in Fir Park.
Rodgers had been asked for a further explanation by Lewis after he told her in regard to the title race, ‘the story has already been written about this group, but we will write our own story’.
He seemed unhappy when she asked him to elaborate and Rodgers said: “No, no, you know exactly what I mean.” After Lewis pressed him again he decided to end the interview by saying ‘done, good girl, well done’.
Lewis appeared unfazed after the comment but a spokeswoman from the Scottish Feminist Network said: “Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment. That the go-to attitude was condescension is quite illuminating, but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.”
A spokesperson with For Women Scotland said: “It’s depressing that casual sexism is still embedded in sport. Women’s achievements are underrated and dismissed, and their professional status undermined. Rodgers owes the reporter an apology.”
Others in the sporting world also rallied round Lewis and expressed their views on Rodgers’ comment, the Mail reports.
Tam McManus, a former Hibs player, called Rodgers’ post match interview comments as ‘utterly embarrassing’ on X. Also broadcaster Jeff Stelling also stated his disapproval over the Celtic managers ‘good girl’ comment.
