BREAKING | Thando Manana resigns from EP, differences with explosive Cannon suspected

Eastern Province Rugby Union (EPRU) general manager Thando Manana handed in his resignation from the role on Tuesday, Sport24 can reveal.

In a letter seen by the publication, where Manana serves his notice to step down from the position after four years, the former Springbok wrote: "It has been intentional on my part to ensure there is good and sound administration and even when tribulations arose during my tenure."

"It has not been easy years at Eastern Province Rugby Union, but I am proud of the work I have done and the progress made in that period," Manana added.

"After serious deep reflections over the past months, I finally decided that it's a natural time for someone else to come in and take up the reigns with his/her renewed energy and vigour."

It's believed that Manana's reasons for stepping down are closely linked to differences with EPRU president Maasdorp Cannon, who is facing disciplinary charges brought by the South African Rugby Union (SARU).

The charges, which included contravening the SARU Constitution and Code of Conduct, came after Cannon's explosive comments at former prop Godfrey Thorne's memorial service earlier this year.

In an impassioned eulogy, Cannon called mother body president Mark Alexander and his deputy, Francois Davids, "sell-outs". 

In June last year, Cannon, who was acting president during Andre Rademan's illness, brought disciplinary charges against Manana, which weren't proven.

This was after Manana tried to expose alleged attempted corruption at the union.
