BREAKING: Met Office issues snow and ice weather warning for Greater Manchester

A weather warning has been issued for Greater Manchester today, which will stay in place until Sunday (December 30).

The yellow weather warning has been issued by the Met Office for snow and ice. It covers much of the north of England and Midlands.

In our area, the warning zone includes the M60, but some Greater Manchester boroughs fall outside of its remit. They are Wigan, Bolton, and Bury.

“Snow and ice this evening and into Sunday morning may lead to some disruption to transport and infrastructure,” said the Met Office. It is in place from 6pm on Saturday (December 2) to 12noon on Sunday.

It means ‘some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services’, the forecasters say. They added: “[There will be] probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. [Expect] some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.”

The Met Office says the most likely time for snow will be between 5pm and 7pm, with a 60 per cent chance of light snow in the region. Temperatures, which hit -4 last night in the city, are set to stay low. However, it’s not thought the mercury will drop into the negative again.

The BBC Weather service is predicting Saturday to stay between 2C and 0C, whereas the Met Office believes temperatures will stay between 2C and 1C. Sunday is set to see some more variation, with highs of 4 according to both forecasters, but lows of -1C according to the BBC, and 1C according to the Met Office.

This weekend, Greater Manchester
