BREAKING: Man, 61, killed in M62 crash as two men in Mercedes flee scene

A 61-year-old man has been killed in a crash on the M62.

The smash, between a grey Mercedes and silver Skodia Fabia, happened on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway near junction 10 for the Croft Interchange at around 3.45am this morning (Saturday). Emergency services were scrambled to the scene.

The driver of the Skoda - a 61-year-old man from the Wirral - was found seriously injured. He was rushed to Warrington District General Hospital.

Tragically, he died as a result of his injuries. Two men in the Mercedes ran from the scene.

Two other men in the Mercedes - aged 21 and 23 - remained on the scene and were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. An investigation into the crash is now underway.

The eastbound carriageway of the motorway has remained closed throughout today. A diversion route remains in place.

Any witnesses, or anyone who has any footage of the crash, is being urged to contact Cheshire Police. Sergeant Russell Sime, of the Serious and Complex Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a serious collision which has resulted in the death of a 61-year-old man, and we are committed to doing all we can to establish exactly what took place.

"As part of our investigation we are keen to hear from anyone who was travelling on the M62, near to Junction 10, at the time of the incident and believes they may have witnessed the collision. The same goes for anyone with any CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who believes that they may have seen the occupants of the Mercedes fleeing the scene on foot following the incident.
