BREAKING: Girl, 10, in critical condition after being knocked off bike in hit-and-run

A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being knocked off her bike in a hit-and-run in Tameside.

The smash happened on Hamilton Street in Stalybridge at around 5pm yesterday (Wednesday).

A Toyota Yaris and bike collided in the middle of the road at the junction with Cumberland Street, police said.

The car failed to stop at the scene.

The cyclist was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where she remains.

A spokesperson for GMP initially said the victim was aged eight yesterday, but have this morning confirmed that she is a 10-year-old girl.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

A cordon was put in place after the incident last night with a large police and ambulance presence at the scene.

One eyewitness told the M.E.N how their partner saw the incident unfold.

"He said he saw the car hit the girl on her bike", she said.

"It was only him and another woman who saw it, he went running after the car and the woman went to the girl.

"She was in a pretty bad way because she had to be put on a stretcher.

"When my partner came home he couldn’t stop vomiting, it was horrible.

"When the family came out they were screaming and crying."

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

They particularly want to talk to anyone who has dash cam footage of the crash or who saw the Toyota Yaris in the area.
