Brave Team GB star Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix says 'I didn't want to be alive' in tearful interview after medal heartbreak

Team GB's Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix gave a heartfelt interview after missing out on a second medal at the Paris Olympics.

The 19-year-old was left disappointment following the women's 10m diving final today (Tuesday), finishing in sixth place as she struggled to hit her stride. Spendolini-Sirieix was visibly emotional following her last dive but chose not to dwell on her setback as her Olympics journey came to an end.

Speaking after an impressive final dive, the British star refused to be too downbeat, the Mirror reports. She instead spoke out bravely about her own battle with mental health issues.

Speaking to the BBC, Spendolini-Sirieix said: "Obviously it wasn't the result that I wanted, but I'm not even upset at the competition, the girls dove amazing and did better than me and it wasn't meant to be."

"I'm not trying to be macho, but I'm not upset about my performance. Three years ago, I didn't even want to be alive so today I'm happy to be alive, I'm breathing and I've got my family here to support me."

She added: "My mom was like 'just keep smiling, we are proud of you and we are here to see you'. And at the end of the day that's all I can ask for and I just want to go and see them."

Despite frustration on Tuesday, it has still been an excellent Games for the youngster. She claimed bronze in the 10m synchronised event.

Asked if she was happy with her performance in the French capital, she replied: "Yes, definitely. I'm so happy to be here and be at the Olympic games. It's been a long year and this [today] doesn't take away from my accomplishments and missing out on one medal doesn't change who I am."
