Boy given 'devastating' diagnosis after going to hospital with a twinge in his knee

His bravery in the face of horrendous adversity has been so inspiring it has crossed the divide of United and City fans. Jake Last was showing real promise as a young footballer two years ago.

A dedicated Manchester United fan, Jake was goalkeeper for Burnley under 14s Academy and had earned the nickname "The Cat" for his agility. But his dreams were shattered when doctors discovered a twinge in his knee was in fact bone cancer.

The cancer has sadly progressed so much that despite bouts of chemotherapy and surgery, Jake's right leg now has to be amputated next month. However, Jake, from Chadderton, Oldham, is already dreaming of playing one day for the Manchester City or Everton amputee teams - and even England.

Jake's grit has impressed both footballing halves of the city. Kobbie Mainoo, the United star, who shone in the weekend's FA Cup Final, has sent him a video message. He tells the now 15-year-old: "Hi Jake, it's Kobbie. I'm sorry to hear everything you are going through. Stay strong and I hope everything goes well with the surgery."

A Blue friend of his family donated a framed, signed shirt worn by City keeper Ederson, which was auctioned off to raise hundreds of pounds to help Jake's family through tough times. You can donate here.
