Boy, 16, charged after police find 'discarded' machete in street

A 16-year-old boy has been charged after a machete was found 'discarded' in the street in Burnage.

Police said officers first stopped 'four suspicious males' at the junction of Kingsway and Green End Road yesterday (Sunday). They used stop-and-search powers before finding a '50cm machete discarded close-by on the floor'.

One of the males was then arrested on the scene. Last night, a 16-year-old boy - who cannot be named for legal reasons - was charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place.

He will appear in court in November, police said. A post on the GMP Burnage Facebook page said: "*** CHARGED *** The neighbourhood team were patrolling Burnage yesterday targeting those who may be carrying weapons and/or involved in violent crime.

"They saw four suspicious males at the junction of Kingsway and Green End Road, and after utilising their Stop & Search powers, a 50cm machete was found discarded close-by on the floor. Subsequent enquiries attributed it to one of the males, and he was arrested.
