Boxers laud Yucateco Boxing League outing

Organisers of the just-concluded Yucateco Boxing League (YBL) held in Ikorodu, Lagos State, have described the event as a life-changing experience for Nigerian boxers.

The YBL featured top boxers from across the country with the best fighters winning various prizes over its 13-week duration, which climaxed with the ‘Champions Night’ grand finale.

According to the organisers, the league was designed to encourage boxers to earn a living using their talent and also provide a platform for upcoming pugilists to showcase their skills in various weight categories.

In its maiden season, the league started in November 2023 weekly in different weight categories at selected venues in Lagos and major cities in the Southwest.

Yucateco Boxing Promotions Chief Executive Officer, Omolei Imadu Yakubu, expressed excitement with the success achieved at the maiden season, stating that the result surpassed the expectations of the organisers.

Yakubu assured that the league would go international in season two, saying that talents discovered from the debut season would be allowed to compete against their counterparts from other African countries.

“We are not holding back in our vision to change the face of boxing in Nigeria and by extension the continent. It has been 13 weeks of immense talent discovery around selected communities in the Southwest, and I am happy we were able to achieve our goal despite the enormous challenges in staging the event,” he said.

At the end of the league, GGFM Boxing Club won the season one. It claimed the coveted trophy and prize money, while AbdulRahman Abdulwahab of ESPITA Boxing Club, who won all his seven fights, was adjudged the best boxer of the event. The youngster was rewarded with a
