Botafogo chief opens up on 'complicated' Edinson Cavani transfer pursuit

Botafogo owner John Texor has explained his difficulty in trying to convince Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani to return to South America.

The Reds attacker will be available on a free transfer in the summer after his contract expires at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for the 35-year-old, he has struggled to maintain a place in the squad after suffering from multiple injury issues.

There have been a number of clubs speculated as his next destination ranging from Barcelona, Real Sociedad and a return to his native continent. The expiry of his current deal will see a two-year stint in the Premier League come to an end that saw the Uruguayan score 12 times in 39 appearances.

"We’ve tried, we’re trying. It’s complicated. So no news yet, I’m sorry,” said Textor, speaking on the Botafogo Nela YouTube channel.

In what could be his final season, Cavani has been plagued with a recurring tendon injury that saw him miss Uruguay's World Cup qualifiers, towards the end of 2021 and in terms of his club form, he has just two goals in 12 appearances. Despite his lack of match action for the Reds, he was called up for Uruguay's latest round of internationals and featured in their 1-0 win over Peru but he was consigned to just 23 minutes off the bench.
