Bolton Wanderers suffer huge blow to League One promotion hopes in Wigan Athletic defeat

Bolton Wanderers' hopes of promotion took a hit as Wigan Athletic managed to secure a double over them in League One, thanks to a goal by Stephen Humphrys at the DW Stadium.

The first opportunity of the game came for Bolton when Paris Maghoma managed to get past Luke Chambers but was stopped by Sam Tickle. Wanderers then faced another challenge when Carlos Mendes Gomes had to leave the game due to an injury.

Despite this, they continued to dominate the game. Defender Eoin Toal had two great opportunities but both were thwarted by Tickle.

The second half saw Nathaniel Ogbeta's shot being deflected by Tickle, who also managed to deflect a dangerous free-kick by Josh Sheehan. At this stage of the game Wigan were yet to record a shot on target but 69 minutes into the game substitute Humphrys, who had scored twice in August's 4-0 away win, played a one-two with Chambers before nudging the ball under Joel Coleman.

Wigan had more chances to extend their lead, with Thelo Aasgaard's volley forcing a fantastic save from Coleman and another substitute, Martial Godo, just missing the goal.

Bolton had a golden opportunity to equalise with just two minutes left, but Ricardo Santos missed a header from four yards out. The game ended in a scuffle involving most of the players on the pitch.
