Bolton boxer Cindy Ngamba secures place in Olympics history despite heartbreak in Paris

Cindy Ngamba has written her name place in the Olympic history books despite losing in the semi-final of the women's middleweight boxing.

The 25-year-old had already secured a medal by reaching tonight's (August 8) semi-final against Atheyna Bylon, from Panama. Sadly, she was unable to make it through to the final - losing on points over three rounds.

But her performance in Paris has still seen her win a bronze medal - making her the first-ever Olympian to secure a medal for the IOC refugee team.

The crowd in Roland Garros in Paris could be heard chanting Cindy's name while waving Union Jacks during a hard-fought battle. On several occasions her Panamanian opponent drew the ire of fans, and incurred a point penalty in round three.

An energetic start to the bout saw Ngamba clipped by Bylon a couple of times and although the refugee fighter grew into the round, she struggled to land her punches and the first round went unanimously to the Panama boxer.

The second round resembled a wrestling match at the start, but both fighters went on to land some good body shots and Ngamba threw a flurry of punches to cheers from the crowd to level the contest.

Bylon threw a tidy uppercut at the start of a scrappy third round, but was then penalised for repeated holding. Ngamba managed to break through and land a couple more blows but Bylon was ruled the victor.

Ngamba was born in Cameroon but grew up in Bolton. After coming out as gay aged 18, Ngamba is unable to return to Cameroon and she her status is currently that of an asylum seeker. However, she has not been granted citizenship in the UK, and therefore could not represent Team GB in the
