Boks relish return to action of original 'Bomb Squad' member RG: 'A very special player'

The news that lock RG Snyman is fit and raring to go has been welcomed by the Springbok camp.

Snyman's Irish club, Munster, earlier in the week confirmed that the lock was ready to be selected again.

Snyman, who has plied his trade at Munster since 2019, missed the Springboks' year-end tour to Europe in November after a setback in his rehab.

The 28-year-old has endured a horror injury run in recent years. Successive cruciate ligament injuries, as well as burns from a firepit accident, have seen him play just four games for Munster in two years.

He also hasn't played for the Boks since the 2019 World Cup where he was part of a potent quartet of locks alongside Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager and Franco Mostert.

While addressing reporters in Cape Town on Tuesday, Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick welcomed Snyman's return to fitness.

"I saw on the news that RG Snyman [is close to returning]. I saw him when we were in Ireland. I know that he is so desperate to get back on the field," Stick said.

"He has gone through tough times in the past. Unfortunately it's part of the game. I know he's a strong character and human being. I hope things go well for him for the rest of the season. If he gets back into shape, maybe we can also consider him for the World Cup squad."

A fit Snyman could prove vital in revitalising the 'Bomb Squad' tactic the Boks made famous at the World Cup in Japan where they picked six forwards and two backs on the bench.
